I photograph women in the prime of their lives — accomplished, particular, and rarely photographed the way they deserve to be. My eye was trained in advertising and for more than twenty five years I built campaigns for brands like Pepsi and L'Oréal, working alongside some of the best creatives, photographers, directors, and stylists in the business. What pulled me toward portraiture was Mario Testino's iconic Diana series from the late 90s. You could feel the confidence and energy who wasn’t just being captured; she was standing in her own power, recognizing what she was capable of and stepping into it. That's what a real portrait can do: not document a woman, but catch her in the act of becoming her next self. Years later I became a photographer in earnest after I sat for yet another headshot for a pitch — technically accurate, but with one size fits all lighting and no guidance on how to move, the image did little capture who I was. I knew I wasn't the only one that had happened to. So I built June 4th Studio to make the other kind of portrait. Lit with intention, made slowly. Editorial, not a glamour shot — a real likeness of a woman who has nothing to prove.
